Complex algebraic surfaces were discovered and studied at the beginning of the algebraic geometry theory by the Italian school (Castelnuovo, Enriques, Severi, Veronese…), together with the German school (Hilbert, Noether, Kummer…). Though the field is now very active, the classification of these surfaces is yet far from being satisfying. In this talk, I will expose the current knowledge on these objects and (some of) the main open questions and problems.
