Resumen:
The classical symmetry result of Gidas, Ni and Nirenberg, asserts, under suitable hypotheses, that positive solutions of semilinear elliptic Dirichlet problems inherit the symmetry of the domain. However, there are examples (when some hypothesis fails) of solutions which do not inherit the full symmetry of the domain, but one would expect that some partial symmetry is preserved.

We will describe some recent results in this direction based on the analysis of the Morse index of the solutions and on the maximum principle.
