Currently, methods introduced in biological research have spread out towards disciplines such as medicine, behavior biology, ecology, information theory, among others. Most scientists working with biological questions find out that to answer them, one must take a systems biology approach to understand the complex processes involved in cell, individual and population evolution as a whole. Currently, researchers are faced with the need to analyze large amounts of raw data, for which they require a fair amount of programming skills.

The II Summer School in Bioinformatics, organized by the Institute of Mathematics and the Institute of Neurobiology from UNAM Juriquilla, will take place from Sunday, June 11th to Sunday, June 25th, 2017. It will be held at Centro Académico Cultural (CAC), UNAM Juriquilla.
In this two-week summer school, students will learn how to use a Linux programming environment, besides of hands-on programming and basic data analysis in two leading-edge programming languages: Python and R. Courses will be taught by experts in the area and will consist of theoretical and practical modules.
The activities of this school will consist of courses and conferences geared towards undergraduate students, graduate students and young researchers interested in acquiring knowledge in bioinformatics.

The school stands on a "learn by doing" philosophy. This means students will be acquiring skills by doing examples and using real biological data. During the school, the students will have projects of their own proposal and interest that they will develop in small groups under an assistant's supervision. Previous programming skills are not required to apply to the school (although they are suggested), only an interest in developing competent skills in bioinformatics is required
